'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Still Rules Box Office, Holding Off 'The Help'

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" still dominated the North American box office in its second week. The prequel of the 1968 sci-fi film, however, dropped around 50% from last week with an estimated $27.5 million from domestic ticket sales.

Nonetheless, the Rupert Wyatt-directed movie becomes the third film this summer to take the highest spot in the chart for more than one week after "Thor" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon".

Trailing behind "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" at number two was Emma Stone-starring drama "The Help". The newcomer on the chart has raked an approximately $25.5 million. The movie earned around $5 million more than what analysts previously predicted, with around 73% of critics recommending the film.

Another new entry, "Final Destination 5" landed at the third position with an estimated $18.4 million, which fell from prediction. The fifth installment of the thriller franchise was actually expected to earn not less than $23 million on its first weekend.

Raja Gosnell's animated movie "The Smurfs" dropped two positions from the second to the fourth this week. The film added approximately $13.5 million to its domestic cume totaling $101.5 million after playing in theaters ten days. Meanwhile, another new entry "30 Minutes or Less" rounded up the top five with an estimated $13 million, far from the expectations of Columbia Pictures.
